You should never build your own pad for a regular wood burning gas or coal stove unless you re a pro or you are very familiar with the requirements.
This pad must be resistant to fire and solid enough to hold the stove s weight.
Use 1 4 inch tile.
Make sure the tiles sit flush with the front edge of the pellet stove pad so you only have to make cuts to tiles on the two sides of the width and the back edge of the pad.
